History of the Scrub and Central Avenue

City-of-Tampa-Perry-Harvey-Park-Natalie-Blake-Studios-H "The Scrub, once Tampa's oldest and largest African American neighborhood, traces its history to just after the Civil War, when newly freed slaves built homes in a scrub palmetto thicket outside of the Town of Tampa. The heart of the Scrub was the Central Avenue Business District."

Working on a mural

Natalie is working closely with a client to design a wall mural for the client's living room.  Using tiles we have in stock, Natalie has designed this piece, comprised of 16", 14" and 12" tiles. The client emailed Natalie an image of the rug in the room; the vibrant colors in this mural play very well with the client's color scheme. According to Natalie: "I really enjoyed putting this grouping together and could have kept tinkering and moving all day.  The spacing is, of course, not correct, but this is really just a first take on colors, design and general layout."       handmade, ceramic wall art tile by Natalie Blake

Patchwork

We're working on a 36-tile commission for a hospital installation.  The image below shows the center grouping of 18 tiles.  They are carved and awaiting the bisque firing. Cynthia has been creating this piece and wrote the following about it: "As I carved this grouping I kept thinking about the scrap quilts I've been making. Each square seems like it's extracted from a larger pattern. Each pattern has a different history. We put them together and the eye flows from one to the next creating a new order and harmony."   center carved

Creating a new mural

Corporate Art Group, Warwick, RI, recently commissioned a Tree of Life ceramic tile mural for a residential client. The mural will be installed on a cobblestone-like fireplace.  Stay tuned for an installation shot.   Here is the sketch we prepared  for approval by the client

Here's what Cynthia had to say about this piece:   "The placement of the leaves on a tree is determined by the leaves' access to sunlight.  As I carve, my lines are determined by the placement of the leaves.  Similarly, the carve lines of the trunk are determined by the branching patterns.  While the trunk lines don't look like any particular kind of bark, they represent the awesome transformation of energy that happens to create these magnificent forms. There's an order that comes out of that process that reflects the order of the natural world."

New Healthcare Installation

Thanks to Barbara Markoff, corporate art consultant, Artrageous! San Diego, CA for these photos. She commissioned these wall tiles for a waiting area in a hospital.  We worked closed with Barbara to get the right designs and colors for the space.  Each mural is 48" wide x 24" high.

Mural hangs in Hawaii

This piece, called Mauna Kea, is installed on a stone wall in a garden at a Hawaiian residence.  Natalie met the clients at the Philadelphia Museum Show.  They saw her work and commissioned a mural to decorate this wall, which blocked their view of the volcano, Mauna Kea (side note: it's the highest point on the island of Hawaii).  They wanted a piece that would "show" them the volcano. Natalie embellished the design with flora from the island, including the wild ginger plant. Natalie's fiance, Nick, installed the piece.  His meticulousness ensured that the tiles are straight and inline with each other--not an easy task on an irregularly-shaped, stone wall. Here's what the client says about the piece: "Your work just keeps on amazing us.  We love our volcano, especially during the evening when the setting sun lights it. I also love the face that inadvertently showed up in the clouds to blow the wind.  Absolutely genius." Ceramic Wall Art Tile, Outdoor Art
